Freej-Gate !
December 21, 2006
I don’t know about most of you readers , but most of my family watched Freej , the Cartoon from Dubai TV
and they liked it , and where impressed by how Emirates people did that
Well it seem it wasn’t Full Emiraty thing as they claim
UTV Toons is currently executing projects such as “Tripping the Rift”, a popular animated sitcom in the US, “Magic Cellar” for the South African Broadcasting Corporation, and “Freej” the first animation project funded by Dubai’s media city.
So what does the current slate look like?
Currently we are working on 15 Direct to home Movies for the North American market. These DVDs are all outsourced assignments and the deadline for completion is September 2007. The current output is 150 minutes of animation a month and the plan is to double that soon. We are also doing a 104 episode TV Series for a Holland based company
as well as Freej a Series of seventeen short episodes of 15 minutes each for Dubai Media City telecast on Dubai City.
It seem dubai TV did the voice over :p

lamtarra, an emarati designer drew the characters and used computer animators to create his dream.
It was his idea, his project… he just got people to help bring it to TV

ananyah i saw an interview with him where he claim it was
all done by Emarati people , drawing and animation
now we are sure that the animation wasn’t done by Emararati , i’m not too sure about other stuff

I could care less who did the animation .. the fact is, someone in UAE did something. I have no problems bringing in the whole staff from disney if it helped us create one decent show like Freej.

i don’t know wat U all know about tv/animation direction production and postproduction, but by all means Freej qualifies as an Emarati project because it’s direction/creation/scriptwriting and major production has been totally emarati. There are technical things which were outsourced but in today’s globalized world, international outsourcing is normal for budget or lack of expertise reasons.
The characters were drawn/sketched by emaratis so i don’t see the problem..
post production and actual computerized animation is a just a couple of aspects of the entire project.

i buy and sell a machine that generates water from air. it is singaporean, but guess what, the company itself tells you that 90% of the parts and material come from china and elsewhere. But it qualifies as Singaporean because in singapore they specify the criteria of deciding whether something is made in Singapore or not. And in this case the Intellectual Property used in building the machine is entirely Singaporean and IP in that country accounts for some big percentage of whether a product is Singaporean or not..
hope that clarifies a little and makes a point

just as i replied to ananyah
In the interview he claimed that they done everything
even animation , now we know that they didn’t do the animation , why should i trust that they have done the design ?

I think overall its a great job they he and his team did to get it to TV. It was his idea that he needed support with, sometimes in projects you can train your team to work with an outside company so they can do the work later! But overall they put a lot of effort into it! Well done!
